Modernization and support of research activities of the national infrastructure for biological and medical imaging Czech-BioImaging

The project supports: technology development and infrastructure modernization, implementation of the research within individual key activities.

This project allowed for the modernization of the infrastructure and purchase of the following instruments:
 

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY FACILITY


Leica EM ICE – a device for high pressure freezing of biological samples – it enables to track fast events, such as those during the activation of nerve cells with time resolution of nanoseconds, which wasn‘t possible before.


Leica ACE900 - a device for freeze fracturing and for creating replicas. To this moment, it has the best technical performance for the given method. It will allow for a crucial development in the projects relating to the study of function of lipids in cell cores. This device is not in any other Czech facility.


LIGHT MICROSCOPY FACILITY


TESCAN QPi – this new quantitative phase microscope is able to display and capture cells and even intracellular structures in high resolution and very carefully only with the help of transmitted light. A captured image is then used for further analysis, where it is possible to gain information about a number of cells, the speed of their movement, direction of the movement, speed of their growth, wight, and the speed of the cell division.


Zeiss Axiozoom V.16 – a microscope with an apotome providing a structured illumination and continuous variable magnification, which allows for capturing images of large objects, whole organisms or capturing the images of larger areas of tissue samples higher resolution as well thanks to the confocal extension piece.


MASARYK UNIVERSITY


Eye-tracking system for use within MRI scanner – typically with fMRI studies with visual stimulation. Some type of studies require eye-tracking to record the real proces of reading words/sentences, watching some photography/scene, to analyze the attention (time) paid to specific part of presented visual scene etc. It is important equipment for some type of fMRI studies.


Laser scanning confocal microscope with Airyscan unit allowing to obtain lateral resolution 140 nm equipped with incubator unit and with additional laser lines and detector arrays. Ranging from spectral imaging, throughout quantitative imaging up to advanced live cell imaging experiments with improved resolution.


MASARYK UNIVERSITY - FACULTY OF INFORMATICS

A server for data storage: it is a new data storage of 1,8 PB raw capacity allowing to store multidimensional biomedical image data (up to several TB per one experiment). Furthermore, new and extensive processed image data are created during image analyses with the help of various methods, which are also needed to store. Such large storage was never before available for everyday use in terms of image analysis.



INSTITUTE OF EXPERIMENTAL BOTANY

A two-photon microscope Bruker Ultima IntraVital is a well-rounded image system, which provides basic multi-photon image properties with the option of the photo-activation choice. This microscope is designed mainly for the in vivo studies, which provide deeper imaging and resolution, even during the most complex applications.



CHARLES UNIVERSITY - FIRST FACULTY OF MEDICINE

Vevo 3100 and LAZR X modules for US and PA preclinical imaging. The aquisition of this technology completed our basic portfolio of imaging methods for a possibility of noninvasive in vivo anatomical (US) and molecular (PA) imaging with very high resolution (30 – 50 µm). PA is a unique modality and our machine is the first installation of this methodology in the Czech Republic..
